Hello Families,
-
This week you should have received the first part of your child’s homework, Raz Kids. It is important that you allow your student to practice this at home. Please help your child remember his/her password so we can use it in class.
-
We are collecting Box Tops. With your help we can win the contest! PLE gets money for each box top collected. Please send them in!
-
Please keep toys at home. Toys from home distract students and the toys get lost. Please make sure your child does not bring any toys to school.
-
The volunteer schedule will go out on Tuesday. If you still would like to volunteer you can find a form on this website, under the “Parents” tab.
-
Thursday is Spirit Day-Wear red, white and/or blue!
-
Our schedule has changed, on Friday we now have gym once in the morning and once in the afternoon.
Reading:
After testing each student on their letters, I am happy to announce that most students know the names of their letters. We are now going to work on letter sounds. We went over the letters A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I and we are beginning to stretch out words and listen for what sounds we hear. We will begin by listening for the beginning letter sound and putting that sound with a word. For example, “River begins with “r” like in rabbit and red.” Students are still learning how to read color words and are beginning to look at the first letter to identify the color. Students who know the first letter in words are working on identifying the middle and ending sounds of words.
Phonics:
We are studying syllables or parts of words. Students who have well-developed phonological skills generally learn to read with more success. These abilities are important in learning about the language and provide the foundation for learning the sound-print connection. An effective reading program includes many components, including syllable awareness.
Writing:
We are learning that our picture tells a story and we are writing about things we know. I introduced a writing checklist. This checklist lets students know if they followed the writing lessons. Some days I keep the writing at school and other days I send the writing home. If I worked with your child on writing, I use a different color pen or I write my initials on the paper.
Math:
We focused much of the instruction on counting, sorting, number sense and ten frames. Teen numbers can confuse many kindergartners, just being able to count the teen numbers is not the same as understanding that 10+3 is 13 or 1 ten and 3 ones is 13.
This week we will continue to describe and make shapes. FYI– students need to know the difference between a hexagon and an octagon . Students will be asked to draw a hexagon on the first quarter math test.
Science:
We are learning about the 5 senses and how to use the senses like a scientist.
Recess
We go outside for recess every day and an extra hour on Wednesday, unless it is raining or below zero degrees. Your child may not stay inside. During recess, I have meetings with the other kindergarten teachers. Please dress for the weather. It would be a good idea to look for hats, gloves, snow pants and boots right now, before it gets too cold and they sell out. I bought two pair of gloves for my son for $5 each on sale at Target. Please label EVERYTHING! Hats, gloves, coats, boots and snow pants all look the same. Please put your child’s name EVERYTHING
