What can I do this summer to help my student?

I will miss this year’s class! They are such leaders and insightful students. The summer slide is real; students lose a lot of knowledge they learned over the summer. The number one thing to do is to keep on reading and writing in a journal or diary at home. Either read to your child or have your child read on their own. Take your child to the West Bloomfield Library! It is a remarkable library with everything one could need!

Studying math over the summer is more tricky. I suggest signing up for https://www.khanacademy.org, or the https://hourofcode.com both of which are free. I highly recommend khan academy; it will help any student with lessons in math (really all subjects) and help your child get ahead.

If you can afford it, there is a fantastic pay site & app that I use with my son called ixl (https://www.ixl.com/math/). It cost about $10 a month. Ixl math is better than ixl reading. I started my son in ixl math, beginning in kindergarten, and he still uses it weekly. It explains a concept; then he answers a question, if he gets a question wrong, the website explains how to do the problem.

As always, iReady math and reading will be available during the summer
(until August 7th) . This is free and the more that your student uses it, the more he/she will be prepared for first grade in Walled Lake. iReady is only open for districts who pay for it; we are lucky to have it.

Do not forget to let your child play! Play outside, let him/her have free play, learn to ride a two wheeler, go swimming. Metro-Detroit has so many great events and cultural places like the Detroit Institute of Arts, Ann Arbor’s Hands on Museum and the Zoo. Giving your child experiences will tremendously help him or her!

Thank you for a beautiful year and for supporting me in kindergarten! If you need anything please let me know. I will always advocate for you and your family.
