This week our theme was the 5-Senses, and we learned all about how scientists use the senses to help them and how we use our senses to help assess danger. We practiced a fire drill and learned about alert drills. There was a medical emergency in the class, and our knowledge about alert drills made sure that everyone was safe and we were prepared, not scared. Our 5th Grade buddies started to come and will come every Tuesday afternoon to teach us a new game. This week we learned a rhyming match from the fifth graders (see pictures below).
In class volunteer
I am always open to volunteers- parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, or sisters. Here is the link to sign up. You will most likely play a game in the hallway with a couple of students or work on a craft with students I prepared. You can volunteer once or multiple times at the link below.
If you would like to volunteer in class, please visit the following: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090a44abad2ea20-classroom
Halloween-
Come to school dressed in costume; we will not have time to change in the morning before the parade. All adults and family welcome are welcome to attend the party. I ask if you come to the party, you help your child or help children at a center. I can set up the centers; you will have to run one. If you have not already let me know you are volunteering, please let me know so I can prepare something for you.
Halloween Party
The party is from 10:00-10:45, we will clean up around 10:45, and the parade will begin at 11:00. Years ago, we had the parade, and parents were asked to watch outside the school. I am not sure if that is happening this year.
We will still need these items for the Halloween Party: There are 20 students in class.
Prizes for games
NUT-FREE doughnuts (20)
Popcorn
Paper Plates
Fruit
Progress Reports/I-Ready scores
They will go home on or before Thursday.
Homework-Social Studies
The Social Studies timeline report is due on or before Thursday.
iReady Homework/ Passwords
They will go home soon, there is a new way to sign on, and I will send directions out soon. It is the expectation in Kindergarten that every student spends 30 minutes practicing iReady at home in reading and math. If you would like different homework, in addition, please contact me. I will put your child’s passwords and login information for iReady and Connect Ed on the back cover of their take-home folder.
A turkey in disguise project will go home this week and will be due right after Halloween.
Star of the Week
Star of the Week is different than the star of the day; when your child is the star of the week, they will be it only once a year and take home a backpack with our new class mascot, Mabel. Star of the day is a monthly project your student presents to the class.
Phonics
We continued to work on rhyming and Snap words. We finished our first Unit in Phonics, but we are still studying letters and letter sounds. Our next big goal is to stretch out words we do not know how to spell. Sometimes this is called inventive spelling. Why is inventive spelling necessary? Invented spelling allows children to communicate in writing long before they are ready to spell each word correctly. Another benefit is that children can express their ideas quickly and smoothly in a first draft without being bogged down by trying to spell each word correctly.

Reading-
This week’s theme was the 5 Senses, and we used reading and science together to study the senses. We also learned about putting all the pages together and that books tell a story or give information.
Writing-
We are working on stretching out words phonemically and writing down the sounds we hear. In addition, we began writing books to tell stories about our own life. Next week we will start a new unit on writing pattern books.

Math
We learned about 10-Frames, circles, and sorting this week. As you’ll see below, a ten frame is a two-by-five rectangular frame into which counters are placed to demonstrate numbers less than or equal to 10. In addition, counters can be arranged differently to represent other numbers, which visually helps your children develop a strong number sense.

5th Grade and Color Run Pictures-
We had a wonderful time at the Color Run. Here are some pictures and videos of the event. It was the first time I used this camera, so hopefully, the photos turned out well. Note- I try to take pictures of everyone when I take pictures. If I accidentally missed taking your child’s photo, I am sorry. I am taking photographs, teaching, and running the class all at the same time.
