Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to our Snow week newsletter! Its full of learning and fun activities. Here’s what’s happening in our kindergarten class:
📝 Writing Wonders:
We’re diving deep into the world of storytelling in our writing sessions! Our young authors are learning to transform their imaginative ideas into stories. While they’ve been doing great at writing sentences like “I like my mom,” we’re encouraging them to stretch these thoughts into more detailed stories. To reinforce this skill, we have writing homework assigned three times a week, due on each Monday. Your support in helping them understand the difference between a story and a sentence is invaluable!
📚 Reading Adventures:
In reading, we’re focusing on decoding strategies that build upon our phonics lessons. Students are getting better at reading, blending, and spelling three-letter words. Next up, we’re introducing blends and digraphs. Blends are when two or more consonants are combined and each sound is still heard, like “bl” in “block.” Digraphs are two letters that make one sound, like “sh” in “ship.” These concepts will be exciting new tools in our reading toolbox!
🔊 Phonics Fun:
Our phonics journey continues with a focus on short vowel sounds. We’re using these sounds to help us read new words. Also, a heads-up: the iReady test is approaching. It’s a friendly assessment to understand how much our students have learned and where we can support them more.
🎉 Special February Events:
- Global Play Day: A day for unstructured play, fostering creativity and collaboration.
- 100th Day of School: We’re celebrating 100 days of learning and growth!
- Valentine’s Day: A time to express friendship and kindness in our classroom.
🧮 Math Magic:
In math, it’s all about measurement and capacity. We’re also practicing writing numbers up to 100. Plus, we’re having fun with “Top It” – a kindergarten-friendly version of the card game “War,” which helps with number recognition and comparison.
