Newsletter January 25, 2019

Hello and welcome to another informative and exciting newsletter from Mr. Eubanks and Ms. Eiden!

PLE has many items in the Lost and Found. If you need to check the lost and found you can find it by the doors going to the cafeteria.

In our class we also have a Lost and Found, it is on the yellow coat rack right when you walk in the door. Last Friday, we went through all the snow gear with the students, and we had many unclaimed items. I put these items in the Lost and Found.

Ben is also missing his snow pants, if you took them home can you please send them back in. His name would be on the label.

If your student accidentally brought home someone’s snow gear, can you please send it back?

To best help, your child keeps all their stuff together; please LABEL EVERYTHING! PLEASE!

We had a crazy week with the snow day and Martian Luther King Jr. Day, but it was still a wonderful week to be in kindergarten! This is what we have been working on this week:

Reading

This week we learned how to go “book shopping.” We find the books that are right at our reading level and are interesting to us and read those books. This is helpful because as the students become more advanced readers, they can continuously trade in the more accessible books they have been reading for a while, for newer, more challenging, and exciting books.

Social Studies

In addition to book shopping, we have also been learning about historical figures in our reading. We read true stories (biographies) about Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ask your student what they know about these two people!

Writing

We also learned about past and present in social studies. This was shown through our writing! Your student wrote a book about something they did on the snow day (yesterday at the time), and about growing up. I am so proud of how far this class has come in writing! We have moved away from patterns, and are writing true stories with characters, setting, and a beginning middle and end. The students have learned that there is a checklist to help guide their writing. They are doing a great job!

Math

Math this week we continued working on teen numbers and addition to ten. You can see how much your student has learned by asking questions like “If I have five goldfish, how many more do I need to make ten?”. You can use whatever example you like, and whatever number combination to ten. This is an essential concept in kindergarten.

iReady

We finished up our second round of iReady testing this week! Everyone in our class is now done with both math and reading portions of the test. We could not be more proud! They have done a fantastic job and are showing so much great growth! Thank you for working on those lessons at home! Look for scores to go home soon!

Have a fantastic weekend! Stay warm!
