Hello Families!

I hope everyone had a wonderful spring break! This week’s theme was voted on by the class, the winner was Dogs! We focused our class read-alouds on dog books for the week!

Phonics: This week we have been strengthening our vowel power even more. We focused on words with short A and I during shared reading, edit stories for short vowels A and I.  Since we worked very hard on these activities it gave us the power to light up our A and I on our vowel shield!

Writing: This week we have reflected on our writing and began setting goals by using a writing checklist. To create a stronger how-to book we took a look at a mentor text to see more features that we can use in our writing. We began focusing on using the word ‘you’ in our writing to direct our writing to the reader. We created how-to stories about how to make a pizza and how to blow a bubble!

Reading: In reading we focused on how readers look to the ends of words as they read. When reading tricky words they practiced looking closely at the beginning and the ending to solve the word. We learned another skill as well of previewing a page and locating known words before reading. When we come across a word we know in a snap we put our magnifying glass away, but when we come across those tricky words we pull it out and look closely at the beginning and ending.

Science: This week we started examining rocks in science. Through exploration stations, students were able to examine the rocks through hand lenses, weighing them, and placing them in water. We also went on a rock hunt, where students were able to explore outside to collect rocks for the class. They were able to see where different rocks were and the differences in the rocks as well.

Math: In math we have been practicing our estimation skills. Each day we took a look at our estimation jar, and graphed our estimations throughout the week of how many objects were in the jar. We also continued to practice decomposing numbers. We practiced through bead combinations showing multiple ways to make a number.
