Science:
We explored our classroom pumpkin using our senses! We read many books about pumpkins and their lifecycle. We investigated our pumpkin, used words to describe the outside and inside of our pumpkin, and we estimated (guessed) how many seeds were inside our pumpkin. We even got to cut open our pumpkin and explore the inside!! We used shapes to crave our pumpkin into a jack-o-lantern!
Math:
This week we learned about ten-frames, counting, rectangles, and number stories. We explored what a ten-frame is and how we use it to count numbers and objects. We also thought of ways to make counting easier when we have lots of things. In small groups, we used a ten-frame to put our objects in, put our objects in a line, or multiple lines on five. The students discussed that using these ways to count makes it where we do not trust an object twice on accident! During centers, we explored rectangles and found many rectangles around the room, along with making our own! We also started to explore number stories and thought of different strategies to solve these types of problems.

Writing:
We started exploring pattern books and how we could write our own. We talked about how a pattern book always has repeating words on every page; as a class, we came up with our patterns, such as I can, I like, We like, and I see. Throughout the week, we continued to explore these types of books and created our own! We work with patterns to make sure that all of the pages in our stories go together and make sense. We also explored that pictures in our stories should help our readers read challenging/hard words. We will continue working on pattern books next week!

Reading
We are learning to use our reading superpowers to figure out words. Now we know how to use our pointer power, and we should be pointing to each word; we only point to each word once. If we make a mistake, we use our power to reread to fix our error!

Phonics-
We are comparing different alphabet charts and working on beginning sounds. We learned the snap words: look, at, see. Please practice reading and writing these three new snap words (look, at, see). Many students are confusing the letter c with the word see.
We learned a new computer program called See-Saw. Students practice this during reading and math centers. It helps reinforce skills we learned in class. You can see what your child is learning by signing on at home. I sent home passwords earlier in the week. If you need another password, please let me know.
Volunteers
If you plan to volunteer in the class, please return your volunteer slip by Thursday; I can make a schedule as soon as I receive the responses.
Homework
This week I sent home Turkey in Disguise project, which is due by November.
Kindergarten homework includes completing 30 minutes of math and reading iReady lessons at home. Your student’s iReady password is on the back of their take-home folder. In class, we practice iReady math and reading assignments each week. Practicing the iReady lessons and ensuring that your students get a passing grade on each task will ensure that they do better on the iReady test. We will retake the test in the winter and spring.
It will help me a lot if you show your child how to sign in iReady so they can do it by themselves at school.
Halloween
We are having a shortened Halloween Party and will do Halloween centers. Students are not allowed to wear costumes. Instead, they should wear their costumes at the trunk or treat
Remember that Friday is a half-day! Half-Day Dismissal: 12:25 PM
Friday- Return your library books.
Friday- Trunk or Treat from 6-8 pm
