Welcome to the best part of your week…Our Newsletter! (Pictures and Videos and dates) November 6th

Hello,
I hope you had a wonderful Halloween! We had a fantastic time during Halloween centers. November is a busy month; we are planning our first field trip; we will make Stone Soup later in the month, and of course, THANKSGIVING!

This week’s theme was voting, and we learned about the importance of voting and how to vote. We voted if we liked Oreo cookies or chocolate chip cookies better. Chocolate chip won by two votes. Would you mind asking your child about the words: ballot, the ballot box, and election? To see if they remembered what we studied. Next week’s theme is all about Turkeys. We will read a series of fiction and nonfiction books about Turkeys. (Everyone’s Turkey in Disguise turned out super cute! Thank you for helping your child make that craft!)

FYI- You can find all the newsletters, websites our classroom uses, pictures, and much more on our classroom website: http://mreubanks.com

Reading
We continued to work on decoding words. We are meeting in small groups where I can personalize instruction. Our reading stamina is almost 15 minutes! Once we make our goal of sitting in one spot and reading the whole time, for 15 minutes, we will have a celebration. This week we hunted for snap words, read with a partner, and learned how important it is to check the picture to help us with an unknown word.

Our Reading Lady, Ms. Mimi, came in, and she read us a rhyming book and talked to us about rhyming! We are so thankful that she comes to read to our class!

Phonics
We have been practicing making every alphabet sound and writing every letter of the alphabet. We played ABC school where each child taught a Beanie Baby how to make the alphabet sounds, spell the snap words and write the lowercase letters. (I buy the beanie babies in bulk, and each one is individually wrapped. From time to time, we will repeat this activity and teach the Beannie Baby what we are learning, so please do not be surprised if they take this small toy home. They can keep it.)

I try to send home a list of snap words we studied every week. It will help your student if you practice reading and writing these SNAP words at home. During the week of November 23, we will have another SNAP word reading and writing test on all of the Unit 2 words we studied. If you need another copy of all the words, you can find it here on our classroom website.

Math:

This week in maths, we worked a lot on counting to 10 and finding different ways to make 10. We also played Monster Squeeze, which helps us learn about greater/less than when comparing numbers! Lastly, we talked about length and height by comparing objects that are found in our classroom. We used sentences like, the pencil is longer than the lego, or the lego is shorter than the pencil.

Writing:

We continued writing pattern books this week! We introduced surprise endings, what they are and how we can write a surprise ending. We also worked on stretching out our words in our writing by practicing stretching out our names when running and snapping them back when we stop.

We are acting out a poem.
