Reading
This week we started a new reading workshop unit, Avid Readers. We learned about what an avid reader is and what avid readers do while reading – feel what the characters are feeling and make notes on special pages of the book.
Writing
We continued working on how-to books. We used everything we knew about writing to write the best writing we could! In addition, we learned how to use others’ writing to help make our writing stronger. So, starting next week, writing homework will change to students writing how-to books.
Phonics
We continued working in phonics to master our vowels and make sure that we were using the correct vowels while writing and reading. We focused on the vowels e, i, o, and u. In addition, we concentrated on stretching out words and making sure the words included vowels and included the correct vowel.
Math
This week we worked a lot on decomposing numbers and focusing on shapes, and comparing them with one another. Then, we played the game, what’s my rule? This is an example game where we look at a few items such as shapes and see how they are all the same.
Social Studies
This week, we read a few books that helped us figure out a good leader. We also continued to talk about then and now, and we made our butter and even got to try it! Lastly, we also read a story and worked together to retell the story.
Important Notes:
3/27: We have a read-in day! This means that students can bring a book from home and will have time to read it in class!
How-To Writing homework: Starting next week, students writing homework will change. Students will be asked to write one how-to book a week at home. How-to books are stories that we write to teach someone how to do something. An example of this would be How-to make peanut butter and jelly.
iReady: Students must be completing 30 minutes of reading and 30 minutes of math on iReady each week. The time only counts when the students are actively doing lessons on iReady. Students get time in class to work on iReady, but we need your help to get the students to the 30-minute requirement each week! Thank you for being so supportive; we appreciate you.
