Our First Newsletter 9/2/2023

Hello, and welcome to your first week of kindergarten! I know that your child is tired; I am! This week we worked hard at setting up a warm, safe, and kind classroom environment. Our classroom meetings were about “helpful choices and hurtful choices.” We learned how to line up, how to sit on the carpet, the routines of school, and how to make friends. The books I read out loud all had themes about rules, friendship, and practical choice. I will review the curriculum and much more on Wednesday at Curriculum Night, so I will keep this newsletter short.

After Curriculum Night, we will be starting our poetry and songbook. I type the words to the songs that we learn in class.   This allows students to have a personal book with text that they know. Students will take the Poetry Notebook home on Friday, and they should read it to you and send it back on Monday. We use the Poetry Notebook almost daily, so you must send it back to school.

Every day we have two snacks. Please separate these snacks from their lunch. Please write your child’s first and last name on the front or back of their lunch box. Many children have the same lunchbox, and sometimes lunch boxes get lost. We cannot drink juice or milk during snacks, but we can drink juice for lunch. You can pack more than two snacks for your child, and your child will have the opportunity to eat them.

We currently have 17 students in our class. We have an excellent, well-behaved group of learners! This is one of my best first weeks of school! I was impressed with their manners, cleaning skills, and academic knowledge! I am so proud of all the students after their first week.

I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, September 13 at 5:00pm for Curriculum Night. We will review what your student will learn, answer questions, and more!

Dates:

Friday- No School

Monday- No School

Wednesday, September 13- Curriculum Night at 5:00 in our classroom, room 202

Reading:

We are learning to move throughout the room during reading and math centers. The work being done at centers is not perfect yet. We are just learning expectations.

Phonics

We learned about the letter M and the sound it makes. I also introduced Mabel, a stuffed animal elephant that helps us understand our letters and sounds.

Writing

We took a writing assessment so I could see how students were writing. Overall, it is an area where everyone needs help, which is typical for this time of year.

Math

We are learning about math centers, shapes, and longer and shorter.

SNAP WORDS

Please have your child practice writing their names.
