Newsletter – 9.9.2023

Dear Kindergarten Parents and Guardians,

We hope this newsletter finds you well. The school year is off to a fantastic start! Our kindergarteners are adjusting well to the classroom routine, making new friends, and, most importantly, enjoying their time learning and playing. We are excited to share updates and upcoming events in this month’s newsletter with you.

Classroom Activities

  1. Reading Corner: Our reading corner is a hit! The kids have been exploring a variety of picture books and are participating in “Story Time,” where we read a book as a class.
  2. Writing Workshop- We began the beginning stages of writing and we are learning how to label pictures.
  3. Math Skills: We have started working on basic counting and recognizing numbers. We use blocks and fun activities to help the kids grasp these foundational skills.
  4. Art and Crafts: The children are getting creative! Last week, we made self-portraits that I hung in the hall.
  5. Social Skills: Friendship and sharing have been our key themes this month. The children are learning to take turns and treat each other kindly. Our next theme will be rules and what happens if someone breaks them. Our goal is to name some rules and why we have them. Discuss the consequences of breaking rules. Identify fairways for groups to make decisions. Explain the importance of the American flag and its symbolism.
  6. Phonics: I wanted to take a moment to talk about the vital role of rhyming and syllable awareness in your child’s development. We are and will be studying them in depth.
    • Why Rhyming Matters: Rhyming helps children recognize similar sounds in different words, an essential skill for phonological awareness and spelling. Through rhymes, children begin to understand the structure of words and how they can be manipulated. Rhyming games and nursery rhymes are not only fun but educational, aiding in memory retention and vocabulary growth.
    • The Significance of Syllables: Understanding syllables is like understanding the ‘beats’ in words. Being able to break down words into their individual syllables helps children in multiple ways. It enhances their reading skills by making it easier to decode large words and aids in spelling. Syllable clapping games are a fun, interactive way to reinforce this understanding.
  7. Both rhyming and syllables lay the groundwork for proficient reading and writing skills. We’ll be engaging in various activities in class to hone these skills, but reinforcement at home is invaluable. Simple games like rhyming word matchups or clapping out syllables in household items can make a big difference.

Reminders

  1. Snacks: Please pack two healthy, nut-free snacks for your child. We have 2 snacks daily.
