This week’s theme was, “The Three Little Pigs.” We acted out, and read different versions of this classic story. We used this story to talk about lying, tattling, and when to tell the truth and work hard. Remember to return the writing homework on Tuesday, keep on practicing on iReady (the next test is coming up soon), and practice the Snap Words. If you need extra copies of anything please let us know.
Please label your child’s snow pants.
Writing
This week, we reviewed how we write stories for our readers by using pictures, spaces between words, and adding more words. We wrote stories and made sure that we could read them and went back, making changes if we couldn’t. Writing homework went home this week; we accidentally sent more papers than you need. A new writing packet will go home every Tuesday, and it will be due the following Tuesday.
Phonics
We are working on word families. A word family consists of words that share an ending part of a word (rime), e.g., rug, bug & hug. In addition to recognizing rhymes, knowledge of short vowel sounds is crucial when learning to read and spell.
Reading
This week, we focused on knowing our reading superpowers! We learned how our superpowers have sidekicks that help them be extra strong when we read by focusing on pictures, sounds, and words in the stories we read. Students are getting better at decoding words; soon, we will start sending home books.
We made our reading goal, right before Winter Break. Our reading goal was: “Our whole class can stay in one spot and read for 15 minutes.” Here is the graph of how well we did each day.

Math
We were introduced to teen numbers this week and added two numbers together to make a more significant number. We also reviewed shapes and discussed how we could describe them to someone to draw them. We also looked around the classroom to see the shapes that made up our classroom and talked about how shapes are all around us.
