IMPORTANT- At home, please practice iReady. We are going to take the iReady test the week of January 31.

Our Good Morning Song

Writing:

This week in writing, we continued to work on writing true stories. In addition, we learned about how to make our writing easier to read. Students are expected to use two-finger spaces between words, capitals at the beginning of our sentences, punctuation; the pictures should help the reader figure out words that are spelled phonologically. Finally, the whole class is writing letters for each sound they hear. Writing a sound for each letter is hard for many students. Please make sure you are completing your writing homework each week.

Reading:

Our Reading Lesson

This week in reading, we talked about what makes books more challenging/harder to read. We talked about how readers use patterns to help them read almost every page and figure out the changing words in those patterns we see. On Monday, we are going to celebrate our reading superpowers. These are the ways that help us decode words. Please wear red or blue, I will give each child a cape and a mask, and we will continue to use these reading superpowers each day.

Math:

Students learned a lot about adding this week and what it means to add two numbers together. This week we continued to work with teen numbers by playing growing train! We also continue to work on story problems every day during our math lessons. We talked more about what the addition symbol is and what it means.

Science and Art:

This week we started our push and pull unit of science:

  1. We talked about what pulls and pushes mean and how we can move things that we use every day; doors, chairs, books, something on the playground, etc.
  2. We pushed air through a straw to make bubbles in a bowl full of water, soap, and paint during art.
  3. We used a piece of paper to see our bubbles after making them.

Phonics

We are learning to work on reading word parts. For example, in the word “pin” instead of sounding out each of the letters p-i-n, we look at the word part we know “in,” and add a “p” sound.

You might have noticed some ziplock bags of words, pictures, or word parts coming home. These are activities that we did in class. You are welcome to ask your child how to make the words in the bag. They should know how to do it; please text us if you have any questions about the activity.
