Newsletter 9-18-2022

Hi,

We had another great week! Thank you for all your help and all the good wishes when I was sick. I hate taking days off, but I am feeling better after a weekend of sleeping. Last week our theme was birthdays, and next week, we will be learning from the Pete the Cat books. Please remember to have your child read and send the Poetry Notebook every Monday.

Dates:

Tuesday- 1/2 Day

Friday- Picture day and last day to purchase bagels

Math-

This week we continued to work on patterns and number sense. In addition, I introduced ten frames, and what numbers mean. Understanding numbers, what they mean, and ways to show a number is critical to learn and will benefit your child throughout their math experiences.

 Students are given a 2-second quick look at dots and are asked to determine that number without counting it. Then, using ten frames, students share with their partners what number they saw and how they saw it.

Reading/Writing
We learned that there are three ways to read a book:
  1. Look at the pictures
  2.  Read the words
  3.  Talk about the story.
Next week we will learn about concepts about print and reading stamina. Stamina is how long you can do something without stopping. We want to build our reading stamina to 15 minutes through parent-teacher conferences. Your child should be able to read and write their first name. Only the first letter should be capitalized when your child writes their name.

Phonics-

We learned the letter sounds and studied the word “me.” We also learned the letters: Mm, Nn, Aa, Rr, and Cc, and next week, we will continue with the vowels.

Social Studies-

We learned about the rules and studied the flag. Friday was Constitution Day; we made flags and discussed the Pledge of Allegiance.

Writing

We are making pictures that tell a story and beginning to label our drawings.

SPELLING & VOCABULARY:
Teaching vocabulary and the meaning of words is essential. Below is a list of words your child should understand what they mean. Our class will learn about the following words in the next few weeks. Please talk to your child about what they mean (they do not have to know how to read or spell these words):
* Autumn and Fall
* Stamina
* Patterning
* Sorting
* Teen numbers
* Ten frame
*The Five Senses
